Blog # 2......Poetry

Reflect on the similarities and differences between writing poetry and writing about poetry. How did writing about poetry inform your own poetry, and vice versa? What did you learn from this experience that you could use in your future teaching?

Hi there everyone,

This week's blog is on my reflection on poetry. Since we all had the opportunity to write poetry and write about poetry, I was able to reflect on both aspects. There is a major difference between writing poetry and writing about poetry. When writing poetry, one is able to express feelings, thoughts, emotions, or just a mere reflection of life. Whether I was writing a found poem (not my own words) or 'wrecking the first person', I was able to be creative. I could choose my own rhyme and rythm, and even choose my own literary devices; such as methaphors, onomatopoeia, or a simple simili. When writing about poetry, I had to write from a professional point of view, basing my analysis with examples that are taken from the poem itself. I also had to use outside sources to guide myself, in order to have a reasonable analysis.

By writing about poetry, I had the opportunity to notice the use of literary devices that the other poet used. I noticed how somethings could be done. Writing about poetry is an opportunity to learn by looking and analyzing. I believe that this assigment was helpful because, as future teachers, we can have a feeling of what students will experience as they write any type of poetry. Also, we can recognize on time the struggles that they can face, and now is the time to look for a way to fix it.
