Hi, my name is Cindy, and I am 21 Years old.
I am a graduating senior in the class of 08'. I am so excited but at the same time so scared.
I currently work as a Teacher Assistant at Los Angeles High School. I must confess that I love my work, and that it's rewarding to know that I can help others. I have already been offered the possition at my work place, and yes, I am excited. I cannot stop thinking about whether or not i will be a good teacher. I want to become a teacher because it is a rewarding career. I want to be able to say that i did something productive with my life....once i am in my death bed, OFCOURSE!...(hahahaha). Also, I had the opportunity to realize that teaching is a calling, and not a career, and that whoever is in for the vacation time or the money is not going to be a good teacher! i want to be a teacher that can inspire someone to want to learn more. I also want students to like me for what i can teach them, and not for the grade that i can give them. I believe a teacher needs to be secure of himself, know his stuff, and be "cool" with the students, without ever forgetting the border line between a teacher and a student.
I believe that technology needs to play a big role in a classroom. The children are computer wizards; they use computers at home while listening to music, and watching TV. A classroom without technology will bore students to death, and that will create a chaotic teaching/learning environment. I think that technology should be included in the lesson plan so that students feel comfortable, but I dont believe it should be used 100% of the time.

Well, Cindy, I must say that i truly agree with you on one point you make in your blog. You mentioned that teachers should be cool with their students while still mainting a certain distance. I hope to be one of those teachers that students can come to and ask for help in any situation. I think as teachers we all get scared that we are going to be placed in an akward situation if we get too close to our students, but being a reachable friend is also part of the job description...at least to me. With the lack of role models for young adults now a day's a teachers influence would be a positive one. However, there is a fine line that should not be crossed and i am almost certain, that of all the students in this class wanting to become teachers, we all know what that line is and seek not to cross it.
Congratulations, on your upcoming job opportuniy and i KNOW you will do fabulously. Take care!
I would have to disagree with your technology assessment. English does not really need tech to get through. You just need something interesting enough and edgy enough to get them to sit up and pay attention. A good book is the only thing you should really need. this is all my opinion of course. Not to say I hate tech (obsessive gamer and technofile here) just it needs to remain simple in my mind.
Everything else I totally agree with. I loved the teacher that knew you beyond a class room persona. Those are the ones that you remember. The only problem is getting too close and getting sued because you overstepped some boundary that you didn't know existed. Scary stuff.
Cindy -
I agree completely that a classroom without technology will drive students insane. That is like taking the rides out of Disneyland. What's the point? It is important that we keep up with technology, and learn to bring it into our classrooms so as to keep our students engaged.
Also, how did you get your job as a teacher's assistant? I'm thinking of doing that, to gain some extra experience before I jump into the profession. I've looked on the LAUSD website for careers opportunities and haven't been able to find anything.
Good luck with everything!
